This Saturday is the 91st anniversary of the death of Captain
Robert
Falcon Scott, famed British polar explorer who lost his life returning
from
the South Pole in 1912. A commemoration is taking place before and
after the
play "Terra Nova" by Bucks County resident and Oscar and Obie winning
writer
Ted Tally.
The Commemoration will take place before the show with images from the expedition, speeches on the history of the event. After the production a small ceremony will be held with food and drink to honor the sacrifice of Scott and his men. The public is invited to this event and to enjoy the drama of their explorer's lives unfold on the Centre Theater stage.
Scott perished with two of his companions just 11 miles from safety after a grueling 1800 mile trek to the South Pole. His last journal entry, dated March 29, 1912 said "For Gods Sake look after our people," a reference to the loved ones left behind in England.
The play, based on the journals of Scott and his companions, is
playing
at the Centre Theatre in Norristown. It has received critical acclaim,
being
hailed in Main Line Ticket headlines as "Ambitious Terra Nova Achieves
Greatness." The review goes on to say "The play's power lies in Tally's
sensitive exploration of character and conscience during the life and
death
struggle. Through Scott's tragic story the play celebrates the human
need for
accomplishment and purpose. Whose life did you enrich? demands a
character in
the play of Scott; the answer in this fascinating production, is ours."
Terra Nova is being produced by Iron Age Theatre, the critically acclaimed company that produced "Luther" in South Philadelphia, "Nathan Hale" at historic Fort Mifflin and "Tunnel," at Eastern State Penitentiary.
The play runs through April 13. Please call 610-279-1013 for tickets and information or visit the web at www.artscc.org. For more information please contact Randall Wise at 610-715-2749
