The celebration will feature Images of the Motherland performing their prodouction of Songhai. They made their mark in the Delaware Valley area in 1997 with Tales of the Dogon, a series of legends and epics from the Dogon, Cliff Dwellers of Mali, W. Africa. These epics span a period from Creation to the 12th Century. They include: The Legend of the Jackal, The Legend of Dogo, The Legend of the Blacksmith and The Legend of Sundiata. These epics featured themes of respect, self-esteem, and positive character development. Images of the Motherland: Interactive Theatre began with a cast of 5 members, and now features a cast of up to 20 extremely talented actors, actresses, performance artists, and musicians. Together, performing to resounding standing ovations, they bring to you the very best of cultural entertainment and educational enrichment unlike anything you have ever seen.
The second group on the bill is In The Company of Poets. They were originally founded as a poetry circle to provide an opportunity for emerging local poets to improve their craft in both writing and reciting by coming together for constructive critique of their poems in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Founded by Pat McLean, Warrior Poet, the other three members of the ensemble are: Nish Pugh, Conscious Poet; Debra Powell, Wisdom Poet; and Oni Lasana, Story Poet. Since November, they have performed at numerous colleges, cultural centers and at Howard University to name a few. In The Company of Poets is the first and finest all female spoken word ensemble who gather together to embrace the positive energy of strength, beauty, creativity and the wisdom of sisterhood. They write and perform original poetry to suit any occasion. They would be pleased to make your acquaintance.
